Pointing Dog Hunting: Máquina’s First Grouse and WoodCock Season! | Ep: #52

Pointing dog hunting continues as we are sharing hunts from this little English Setter’s first season! This pointing dogs first grouse and woodcock season is looked at as much as training as it is hunting. Each opportunity on a wild grouse or woodcock is an opportunity for this little grouse hunting dog to learn, and for us to learn as well.

As you will see in this episode, and the ones prior, Máquina is struggling to pin and hold the wild ruffed grouse. We believe this is due to a number of things, but what is very apparent is that she is learning with each bird encounter! You’ve heard us talk about it throughout this bird dog training series, but in this pointing dogs first season the bird is the ultimate teacher. Lucky for us, Woodcock tend to be much more forgiving!

There have been some real highs, there have been, and will be, some real lows. In our opinion, there is no bird that is more challenging for both a bird dog and bird hunter than the wild ruffed grouse. There’s a quote that has stuck with me when I think about bird dog hunting and training as a whole: “Good farm bird dogs are made on pheasant farms. Good bird dogs are made on wild birds.”

Unlike much of our retriever training series that we’ve done in the past, a huge part of pointing dog training is letting the dog teach themselves, and that can only come from giving them opportunities to mess up on, bump, and miss wild birds. The grouse is the ultimate teacher, its our job to put Máquina in position to be taught.

In this hunt, our little pointing dog did very well, pointing and holding Woodcock like a boss! Pointing dog hunting is an experience in itself, and watching all the training pay off makes it that much sweeter.

We hope you enjoy this pointing dog hunting Northern Wisconsin Grouse and Woodcock! This season was one we won’t soon forget as we watch our little English Setter develop into “The Machine”.
