Break Down of Shotgun Shell Ammo for Upland Game Birds



If you are new to hunting, don’t be discouraged or confused by all the shotgun shell ammo. Have a conversation with the shooting experts at your nearest SCHEELS location.

Starting out, I often use a 8 shot one ounce shell in low brass for trap shooting or hunting doves. I will often use this same shell in a six shot load when hunting sharptail grouse, ruffed grouse and Hungarian partridge or bobwhite early in the season.

Moving into early rooster season, I will switch to a 1 1/4 ounce shell with high brass in six shot early in the season. As the season progresses I often switch to a four shot shell when birds are no longer holding as tight.

Some exceptions would be some of the hunting opportunities on federal refuges and some state managed areas that require a non toxic ammo. We have some rooster hunting opportunities on federal refuges late in the season for example where I often use a three inch 4 shot steel ammo load.
