When training young pointing dogs, I always recommend teaching “whoa” before “sit.” 🐶 If you teach “sit” first, your dog might sit down when confused or pressured in the field, especially when establishing point. Teaching “whoa” first helps them stand tall and stay steady, making for a smoother transition during hunts. But if you do teach “sit” at home, be sure to balance it by practicing “whoa” just as much!

“The Pointer, sometimes called the English Pointer, is a medium-sized breed of pointing dog developed in England. Pointers are used to find game for hunters, and are considered by gundog enthusiasts to be one of the finest breeds of its type; however, unlike most other hunting breeds, its purpose is to point, not retrieve game.
The popular belief is that the Pointer descends from the Old Spanish Pointer that was brought to England from Spain with returning soldiers at the beginning of the 18th century. Once in England, they were crossed with local dog breeds to improve the breed’s hunting abilities.
Etymology
The Pointer takes its name from the stance it adopts when it detects the scent of game, “pointing” at the hidden game as a visible signal to the hunter that it has found something and where it is; the breed is sometimes called the English Pointer to differentiate it from other pointing dog breeds. The term “bird dog” is usually used to describe all pointing dogs and setters, but in the United States the term is often used to describe the Pointer breed, particularly south of the Mason–Dixon line.”

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon overview from an actual owner and trainer of wirehaired pointing griffons in Oxford, Mississippi, USA.
The gun dog supreme, Korthals Griffon, Russian Setter, Wirehaired Griffon, or even Chewbacca, this versatile hunting dog goes by a few names but serves one purpose: to dependably locate and point game, to track wounded or dead game, and to retrieve game on land and water (which is more than one purpose).
Griffs do this surprisingly well despite their laid back demeanor and soft expressive looks and disposition. I got my first Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (Dublin) in 2017 from Dubuque, Iowa breeders Michael and Mary Drapeau and am sold on this unusual gun dog.
I have worked with dozens of these versatile hunting dogs and am amazed at how well suited for families as pets yet effective as hunters they can be.
I post a lot of bird dog videos on this channel, mostly wirehaired pointing griffons, but occasionally German shorthaired pointers, German wirehaired pointers and (hopefully) gordon setters.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon) is a breed of dog used in hunting as a gundog. It is sometimes considered to be Dutch in ancestry, due to the nationality of the breed founder, Eduard Karel Korthals. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a medium-sized Dutch dog breed in the sporting group with wiry fur and signature facial hair. While they are known for their excellent dry land and water hunting skills, these dogs also make laid-back and affectionate companions.

“Small Game Hunting: The Hunt for the Elusive Capercaillie” is a short video depicting small game hunting with a pointing dog. We hunted in Sweden for forest birds. The weather was beautiful, and there was no shortage of encounters.
Hunting with a shotgun and a pointing bird dog for ptarmigan, capercaillie, and black grouse is extremely exciting, adrenaline-filled, and, above all, challenging. The larger the birds, the more difficult it becomes, and the old capercaillie is the hardest to outsmart. Sometimes, they seem like incredibly clever birds. On the other hand, I felt quite foolish as I wandered through the forest, missing one good opportunity after another. The conclusion is that I need to spend much more time at the shooting range with my shotgun instead of hunting in the beautiful forest.

In spring, I chase sea trout, and when the dry fly season for brown trout and Arctic char begins, I swap shrimp imitations for mayfly and mosquito imitations. Occasionally, I embark on thrilling salmon fishing trips for Atlantic salmon in the many rivers scattered up here. As autumn approaches, fishing slows down, and I trade my fishing rod for a shotgun to hunt small game. And so the years go by.
