Mika’s Single | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

I try to allow simple things to bring me joy. For example, hunting with long-time friends. Some things are worth saving and sharing. Like a friend’s dog’s first pointed bird and his afternoon afield with his son.

Here’s Larry’s Mika with a single, wild bobwhite bobwhite. In addition to Larry, and his son Chris, I was joined by our host, and my friend, Jason and his brother Chris. It was a cold blustery day January 9, 2022.

Dot’s Blues Again! | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Mother Nature has favored us with an increase in the scaled bobwhite population on the some of the ranches I hunt each year. I love it because blues are my favorite bobwhite species. Dot has really been lucky finding these coveys all season. This covey from 1/20/24 had flushed wild and Dot was working through the tight holding singles when she found this pair. Fun stuff!

Ellie’s Sumac Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

On opening day in November 2021 Ellie Mae found this nice covey of bobwhites in a patch of sumac after a rough day of hunting. This is the first bobwhite I took with my 28 ga. Beretta. Both the sumac and the sandhill plums were in full color that day shading the prairie in yellow, orange and red.

Jethro’s Mountain Man Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Mike’s pointer Jethro found this nice covey of wild bobwhite in February, 2022. Of the eleven coveys the dogs found that day we were really only able to shoot into four of them because the birds were so wild, as they had been all season. This covey flush was the best we had all day and I’m glad I was able to capture it despite my poor shooting. It’s hard to be to upset though when even Jeremiah Johnson missed also (Mike too).

Floating Feathers Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Dot found this large late season covey of bobwhite up on top of hill on my dad’s ranch in the Oklahoma Panhandle in January 2020. I took two on the rise and you can see the feathers from the first drifting past me as I shoot the second. Fun dog work from a promising young dog and not bad shooting either!

Lily’s Windswept Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

On a blustery late January day in 2025 Lily surprised me with a close point on top of a windswept sandhill. If I had moved on her point immediately the birds likely would have been in the sumac thicket in front of her but by the time I got the other hunters around to the point they had moved downhill and away from she and I. Nevertheless it was a nice find. Enjoy.
