I just went on my third pheasant hunt, and in this episode I’m sharing my experiences with upland bird hunting and what keeps bringing me back to it.

I talk through my first pheasant hunt on public land, how I missed the social side of bird hunting after moving to Tennessee, and how upland hunting preserves became a great opportunity to experience pheasant and quail hunting where wild birds aren’t available.

What I love about upland hunting is the social aspect—it’s a completely different pace from deer hunting. There’s something special about watching well-trained dogs work, the camaraderie in the field, and the way it breaks up the hunting season with a different style of hunting altogether.

I grew up duck hunting but after joining the military and living in several different states and Japan, I came back to pheasant hunting instead of duck hunting.

I also like to go elk hunting in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with my brother. We have fun whether we tag a an elk or not. We call it camping with rifles if we don’t happen to punch our elk tag.

Another opening week at Babcock Webb WMA that was a fun and rewarding day! In this 2025 Florida Quail Hunt, we found some notably large coveys of wild quail and I had more success than last time on the shooting front, but wild birds are still a lot different than clays. After last hunt I thought I might have to sell the Rizzini but got the skunk off. We ran into another unexpected encounter: We spotted what I thought was another hunter’s dog, but it turned out to be a coyote circling and kind of stalking the dogs! Thankfully, it went away after doing some big circles.
