21 Best Dogs for Waterfowl, Upland Birds, Bears, and Small Game

Our tribute, in no particular order, to the best—and most loyal and loving and hardest-working—hunting dog breeds.

“What’s the best hunting dog breed? That depends on who you ask. For some hunters, it’s all about the moment a pointer streaks across a stubble field like a bolt of white lightning. Or when a Labrador retriever vaults after a fallen greenhead. Or when a springer spaniel levitates from the switchgrass, jaws snapping at a pheasant’s tail feathers. When a pack of blueticks strike scent, and the night suddenly throbs with their urgent music. Whenever and wherever we hunt with dogs, we engage in a partnership that spans tens of thousands of years—a partnership so intimate and mutually beneficial that we’ve essentially co-evolved. Some evidence even suggests that the qualities that hunting dog breeds brought to the Stone Age helped allow our ancestors’ brains to devote less capacity to sensory functions, clearing the decks for intellectual growth. In other words, dogs made us human.”

Why I Keep Coming Back to Upland Bird Hunting

I just went on my third pheasant hunt, and in this episode I’m sharing my experiences with upland bird hunting and what keeps bringing me back to it.

I talk through my first pheasant hunt on public land, how I missed the social side of bird hunting after moving to Tennessee, and how upland hunting preserves became a great opportunity to experience pheasant and quail hunting where wild birds aren’t available.

What I love about upland hunting is the social aspect—it’s a completely different pace from deer hunting. There’s something special about watching well-trained dogs work, the camaraderie in the field, and the way it breaks up the hunting season with a different style of hunting altogether.

If you’ve ever been curious about upland bird hunting, especially pheasant or quail hunting through preserves, maybe this episode will nudge you to give it a try.

About me:

I grew up duck hunting but after joining the military and living in several different states and Japan, I came back to pheasant hunting instead of duck hunting.

I have three American Brittany bird dogs, Tori, Charlie, and Lily who are the loves of my life! Tori and Lily are out of Hideaway Kennels and Charlie is out of Windtuck Kennels. Both kennels have produced champion bird dogs. Both kennels are out of Colorado.

Ben Garcia of Hideaway Kennels trains my American Brittanys annually for a tuneup before each pheasant hunting season. Contact Ben at his Hideaway Kennels website. http://www.hideawaykennels.com/

I am a member of Rocky Mountain Roosters where I enjoy pheasant hunting, chukar hunting, and quail hunting. https://rmroosters.com/

I travel to Oregon yearly to go duck hunting on Sauvie Island with my brother who has a two time National Master Hunter Black Labrador Retriever to retrieve the ducks. I also like to go elk hunting in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with my brother. We have fun whether we tag a an elk or not. We call it camping with rifles if we don’t happen to punch our elk tag.

WHOA Training Bird Dogs! OUR FAVORITE DRILL

When it comes to training bird dogs, specifically pointing dogs, the Finished Point Drill is one of the best drills to reinforce the WHOA command and develop that finished pointing dog. Developed by George Hickox, the Finished Point Drill is a training method for whoa training bird dogs that focuses on refining their natural instincts and skills. It is designed to help dogs become steady to wing and shot and reinforces the whoa command.

The key benefit of the Finished Point Drill is that it allows the dog to learn and practice in a controlled environment while also gradually building up its confidence and experience. This helps to ensure that the dog is well-prepared and comfortable when it is finally taken out into the field to hunt.

Overall, the Finished Point Drill is a highly effective training method for pointing dogs and has helped many dog owners learn how to teach the whoa command. Whether you are a professional trainer or a casual hunter training the whoa command, this video will show you how to be able to train your bird dogs to come to you quickly and easily!
