If a dog has the instinct to point when he smells a bird, he can be taught to back when he sees another dog on point. To simplify the training process, you can start with a backing “dummy,” i.e., a plywood silhouette of a dog on point. My silhouette was added to a 2×4 base to make it easy to set-up or lay down. Watch as this 12 month old GSP who has had minimal backing work in the past progresses over literally a 10 minute period and just six pigeons.

Pointer dog training continues as today we are continuing to work on developing her heel work! Heel training is extremely important, and is the base of many of the drills and things we will do down the road with this little pointing dog.

As you have heard us preach time and time again, a dog’s a dog. With any dog, no matter the breed or end goal, the foundation is the most important and the part that must come first to accomplish the things we want down the road. This pointing dog heel training video will be focusing mainly on just that, the foundational dog training, until we she is ready to move on.

This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pup.

Will she point? Eventually yes, I’m sure of that. Until then, we are enjoying every minute of her “being a puppy” and by that I mean an english setter puppy that makes good choices and is exposed to and held to the standard of behavior we expect. Discipline is not a negative word. Discipline earns freedom.
