When I first started in the pointing dog club, we used this method: dropping birds in a bush and having a few homers on hand. When the dog points, toss the homer for the dog to focus on. Remember, you don’t need to kill every bird for training. As your dog progresses, reduce the number of birds you shoot. Initially, one out of three, then one out of five, and eventually one out of ten. 9 month old pointer, Nellie, who had no exposure to birds until a couple of days before this video was shot is quickly taught the concepts of backing (aka honoring) a pointing dog and whoa. Backing is taught by associating that the sight of a pointing dog means the presence of game, and whoa is taught by associating by sound that whoa also means the presence of game.

Each concept, backing/honoring and whoa, is taught in two days and with fewer than 10 birds and with zero pressure applied whatsoever.

This isn’t only the best way to hunt a pointing dog with a flusher, it’s the most fun to watch too! When your pointing dog is steady to wing, shot and fall it allows your flushing dog to key off of their point and move into flush in front of them! This is teamwork at its finest! Quest, our GSP, did a great job demonstrating how steady these dogs can be and Trip, our English Cocker, demonstrated how fast these little balls of energy can pick up on their purpose in front of a pointing dog!
