New Mexico Coveys | New Mexico Quail Hunting

Here are 4 Gambel’s bobwhite covey flushes captured on my trip to New Mexico last weekend. The first three have two views as there were multiple cameras operating. Tucked away at the end, as bonus footage, is an awesome Mearn’s bobwhite covey flush from this week.
Covey flush #1 is Ken’s Four Bird Covey. In the video you can hear Ken tell his wife, Tammy, that there are four birds in the brush ahead. Turns out there were a few more than four. Neat footage.
Covey flush #2 is Cognac’s Crazy Covey. Ken’s GSP Cognac tracked this covey a bit before we got them cornered. When they flush they go every direction. This was a really fun covey rise.
Covey flush #3 is Ellie’s Arroyo Covey. Ellie found these birds in a flat beside a large arroyo and held them between us until we could arrive to enjoy some fun shooting. I really just like to type (and say) the word arroyo.
Covey flush #4 is The Unharmed Covey. Nary a shot was fired as this large covey flushed over the hill past Ken’s Saki.
Bonus Montezuma Quail flush really speaks for itself. It is breathtaking footage for those of you who have never had a chance to witness these birds in person. I love it!

Thicket Coveys | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Hunting has been tough so far this season. I’m finding some coveys deep in the large sand plum thickets we have here in the Panhandle. Because of the absence of any meaningful ground cover beneath the thickets the birds are running to the opposite edge and flushing generally out of range. It makes for tough shooting.
Sand plums, also known as Chickasaw plum, Cherokee plum, or Sandhill plum (Prunus angustifolia Marshall), are native fruit-producing shrubs or small trees in Oklahoma. In Panhandle bobwhite habitat they grow in thickets often intermingled with sumac. Sand Plums offer excellent overhead cover for bobwhite and during the summer produce small, tart fruit that my mother turns into awesome jam.

Dot and Lily’s Great Day Coveys | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

January 27, 2024 was a great day of bobwhite hunting for the dogs and I. The dogs found 6 coveys in 3 walks that day. Lily found 2 on each of her two walks. Dot found 2 on her one walk (I failed to get one of her coveys on video due to a screw-up by the camera operator). I’ve posted all the coveys individually but wanted to put them together so I don’t forget that day. I hope you enjoy them.

Dot and Holly Find Late Season Coveys | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

On the backside of an ice storm some young dogs, Dot and Holly, both had beautiful finds on strong coveys of Oklahoma Bobwhite. I finally got some decent covey flush clips and with Jeff along we caught two angles of every flush.
