If a dog has the instinct to point when he smells a bird, he can be taught to back when he sees another dog on point. To simplify the training process, you can start with a backing “dummy,” i.e., a plywood silhouette of a dog on point. My silhouette was added to a 2×4 base to make it easy to set-up or lay down. Watch as this 12 month old GSP who has had minimal backing work in the past progresses over literally a 10 minute period and just six pigeons.
