German Shorthaired Pointer Ruger Learns to Trust Again

Three German Shorthaired Pointers. Three rescue stories. One hope: adoption.

Meet Ruger, who arrived shy and scared, but with patience, his tail finally came up and his true cuddly nature shone through. Meet Banjo, a resilient GSP who came from a rough past but still loves walks, pets, and affection. And meet Bodie, who recovered from kennel cough and surgery—only to be left behind when a family chose to buy a puppy instead of adopting him.

These dogs remind us of the resilience of rescue and the power of second chances. 💕🐾

Dog Lover’s Introduction German Shorthaired Pointer

The German Shorthaired Pionter is considered by most to be the premiere gun dog for those hunting upland game birds. Additionaly, the german shorthaired pointer is a happy, trainable pet who will bond strongly with their family.

As the name indicates the breed originates in Germany. In the 1800s German hunters spent years crossing various breeds until they created what they felt was the perfect bird dog. There work and attention to detail has paid off, today the German Shorthaired Pointer is the top winning breed in competitive hunting events. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a renowned for it hunting of upland game but is also a successful hunter of possum, rabbit, raccoon, and even deer.

Based on the AKC Breed Standard, The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunter, an all-purpose gun dog capable of high performance in field and water. The judgment of Shorthairs in the show ring reflects this basic characteristic. The overall picture which is created in the observer’s eye is that of an aristocratic, well balanced, symmetrical animal with conformation indicating power, endurance and agility and a look of intelligence and animation. The dog is neither unduly small nor conspicuously large. It gives the impression of medium size, but is like the proper hunter, “with a short back, but standing over plenty of ground.” Symmetry and field quality are most essential. A dog in hard and lean field condition is not to be penalized; however, overly fat or poorly muscled dogs are to be penalized. A dog well balanced in all points is preferable to one with outstanding good qualities and defects. Grace of outline, clean-cut head, sloping shoulders, deep chest, powerful back, strong quarters, good bone composition, adequate muscle, well carried tail and taut coat produce a look of nobility and indicate a heritage of purposefully conducted breeding. Further evidence of this heritage is movement which is balanced, alertly coordinated and without wasted motion.

The breed’s temperament is friendly, intelligent, and willing to please. The first impression is that of a keen enthusiasm for work without indication of nervous or flighty character.

The breed measured at the wither is 23-25 inches at the withers for males and 21-23 inches for females. Males should weigh 55 to 70 pounds with females weighing 45-60 pounds.

Substance-thin and fine bones are by no means desirable in a dog which must possess strength and be able to work over any type of terrain. The main importance is not laid so much on the size of bone, but rather on the bone being in proper proportion to the body.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

The German Shorthaired Pointer, which has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years, is prone to minor health concerns like gastric torsion, hypothyroidism, canine hip dysplasia (CHD), Osteochondrosis Dissecans (OCD), von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD), entropion, and pannus, and major issues such as lymphedema. Other problems that can be occasionally seen in breed include cardiomyopathy, ectropion, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). To identify some of these issues, a veterinarian may recommend regular thyroid, hip, cardiac, and eye exams, and tests to verify vWD.

The German Shorthaired Pointer loves to bark. It is considered a well-mannered, obedient pet, although it is sometimes wary of children. An active dog, it requires a great deal of physical and mental exercise; otherwise, it can become restless and show signs of aggression towards smaller, animals. The breed has a strong hunting drive and will need very firm and experienced handling. If you’re not hunting with your GSP they will need a good two hours free running every day. It can survive outside in mild weather, though German Shorthaired Pointers perform their best when kept inside the house with access to outdoors, several times daily.

Grooming GSP is very easy, the ocassional brushing is all it needs to maintain a healthy shiny coat.

The German shorthaired pointer is an amazing family companion, it is a better hunting companion. This breed is active, mentally sound, and very loving dogs. If you are a hunter, hiker, or enjoy other outdoor activities the German Shorthiared Pointer may be the perfect breed for you.
