Charger, a German Shorthaired Pointer from Camarillo, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Chargerard and Train Program. Charger was trained by Katie Lapin in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Charger came to Balanced Canine Training SoCal with varying behavioral issues, including pulling on the leash, squirrel chasing, jumping up when greeting, counter surfing, generally not listening to commands, and barking at strangers. Balanced Canine Training SoCal was successful in transforming Walker into a well-managed pup.

Here we are doing a few retrieve drills with our Gundog Gear Blaze Orange Bumper which you can find on our website https://gundoggear.com.au

We are also using a wooden clapper to simulate gunfire.

It’s a great tool to not only gradually train a dog to get used to loud noises as you transition to real gunfire, but also for maintenance if you can’t use real gunfire regularly.

It was a short session, but Jax did really well with the retrieves and particularly his stop-to-the-shot i.e. when he hears the clapper (or gunfire) he’ll immediately sit if not sitting already.

However, he still needs work on his hold and marking of the bumper when it lands because at times, the anticipation of the retrieve would distract him and he’d look at me for the relase instead of where the bumper landed.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has been growing in popularity in recent years, and it’s easy to see why: their gorgeous ticked, patched, coat along with expressive almond eyes and big droopy ears make them adorable companions — perhaps that’s why they have a history of performing well as show dogs. This breed is also incredibly smart, loving, and playful, which all adds up to a great family pet.
