Following the rooster: DR650 versus KTM 990 ︱Cross Training Adventure

The poor DR650 is supported by a KTM 990 Adventure, not once, twice, but four fucking times! The nerve of these Kato runners, I don’t know. But it’s still a great adventure trip… Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we love all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia… with occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. This is one of our three channels, there is also a Cross Training Trials channel and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally doubtful. We are the 27th most watched television channel in Uzbekistan. So the goal of Cross Training Adventure is to simply go out and have fun on two wheels and a KTM 990 Adventure. There have been many build-ups and drawbacks along the way as we advance far beyond our very limited capabilities. Jarvis once said that going fast is what’s easy, going slow requires skill and we’ve come to love the challenge of tackling difficult terrain with skill, rather than just kicking back and gliding down easy tracks on a KTM 990 Adventure. We have won the polished poop award five years in a row. And we have a world record of 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information. We think the whole motorcycle scene is becoming too commercial. So-called dual sport driving reviews are just glossy advertisements nowadays. Everyone tries to sell you things you don’t need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop on your KTM 990 Adventure. Of course, if you have the money and like bling, go for it. All we are saying is that there is also the economical option for riding an adventure bike. And it won’t stop you. Because? We calculate that it is 80% the cyclist and 20% the bicycle. We even got to ask His Holiness how to make our bikes do the crazy things his bike does and learn how to ride a dirt bike properly. It can be inspiring, but also demoralizing, to see how well these guys drive. We figured if you can’t beat them, join them. So in recent years, a lot of us 50-year-olds thought we’d try to learn as much of this shit as we could before dementia and arthritis slowed us down. And along the way we’ve been posting dubious enduro training videos free for everyone. And because they’re free, they come with a money-back guarantee if they make your driving worse… and they probably will. And also enter our Cross Training Adventure channel. Instead of obsessing over the latest Beemer, what tires to put on it, or spending a fortune on suspension or a billet alloy gas cap. That’s why most of our adventure videos will feature the much-loved wild pig, the Suzuki DR650. What’s up with our enduro channel? The rise of extreme enduro has seen a new generation of riders pushing the limits of what is possible on a dirt bike… very different to dual sport or adventure riding! So get into cross training. Over 50 completely free training videos on relationships…biology…and how to set up your bike, protective gear, maintenance, and riding skills from beginner to advanced. So what is cross training? It’s just about applying testing skills to dirt riding…by slowing things down initially we can become faster and more importantly better dirt riders. A training session with Chris Birch was a great start. Birchy, arguably the best extreme enduro rider in 2010 despite hailing from New Zealand, shared plenty of tips that made their way into the training videos. Around 95% of the best extreme enduro riders are former Trial riders. So it’s no surprise that these guys say the key to learning to ride fast is to first slow down and master the fundamental techniques. In recent years Graham Jarvis has been the king of the extreme enduro world, and we have even started our own religion based on his teachings. Our local trials and endurocross champion, Ruben Chadwick, also gave us some great tips and videos along the way. And recently Tim Coleman has surprised everyone with his dirt bike tricks and excellent training in Australia and also overseas. We’ll never be able to match these guys, but we’ve been surprised at the new tricks us old dogs can learn. And we’ve done a 10-part series on how to unleash the powerful beast lurking inside you. What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like to do seriously critical reviews. Manufacturers make some really serious mistakes. and there is a lot of dubious junk sold out there. Instead of raving reviews about dual sports for kickbacks or free products, we’ll try to keep the bastards honest. So subscribe. Or don’t subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. If you’ve been a fan of our videos for a while, you’ve probably seen SmartPaker Sarah – she’s the horse in ‘If Horses Were People’, the ‘Stuff Riders Say Girl’, the co-host of our Ask the Vet video series, as well as an integral part of our Ask a Non-Rider series and other videos on our channel. We are sad to announce that Sarah has decided to leave SmartPak. It’s a sad day for all of us as we have now re-edited all the videos she appeared in (it’s a long story). We are starting the IHWP series and wanted to give you a sneak peek of what the auditions were like. Sarah was pretty good in our videos and won’t be easily replaced… but we’re going to try.
