The McDougal Sports Challenge

Shoots across the country are diversifying, playing to their strengths and offering more than just well-presented birds. At the Ashbourne estate in Sussex, the McDougal Challenge involves shooting a male rooster in the morning and then, after a hearty lunch, tying a fly with a tail feather and then fishing for a trout in the clear waters of the lakes. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that eating wild animals has real health benefits. Both rooster and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. In addition to the nutritional benefits of hunting, hunting is worth £2 billion annually to the rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK Government figures) active shooters in the UK who enjoy bird hunting according to the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice. In the UK, over 2 million hectares are actively managed for photography, creating proven conservation benefits (PACEC, 2014) and preserving important habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna, particularly farmland birds. UK game suppliers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds each year and maintain more than 25,000 hectares of wild bird cover.

Shooting roosters on the Shakenhurst Estate shoot

It’s a beautiful November morning in Worcestershire on the Shakenhurst Estate shoot and Ian Harford is photographing roosters. Welcome to Great British Shooting on Team Wild TV. Late November and early December is the ideal time for a day of rooster hunting. The weather is cold and the ground is covered in solid frost, but there is a clear, stunning blue sky. All the trees are free of leaves, the birds cling well to the feeders and offer good sports. Motivated days like this aren’t just about shooting, they’re about camaraderie, spending time with friends and having some friendly competition. Stealing your fellow armed birds really makes the day better. That’s part of a day’s hunt, it’s not just about great sport, great atmosphere and great company, but also about being a little cheeky with sport birds. There is a good mix of landscape on the Shakenhurst estate. Forests, fields, parks, there is a great variety of birds in both styles and species. There have been some lovely roosters and some crispy partridges, moving away from the trees, changing direction and making some very quick targets. This is Ian’s favorite time of year. When the winter season begins, the forest presents a stunning mix of colors. The area is really full of life. Spending time shooting and enjoying time with a group of like-minded people is what life should be about. It’s not just us on the set, but all the guys behind the scenes, the beaters, all the gatherers, the woods are a hive of activity from spaniels, labradors and retrievers. It really is a community type event that brings everyone together on the field. Goose flees from hunting dog (field trial labrador) – Goose hunting in Holland (ganzenjacht)

SUBS IN ENGLISH! Turn up your brightness, it was a cloudy morning. This morning I was with Joe, Red and my partner at a stand. Both are field trial Labs. Mainly of English lineage. The decoys and caller were doing a great job. In this way the geese were perfect for a good and ethical shot. If you are experienced enough to read geese, there is no need to shoot too early and therefore shoot them too high. If they want to be there, let them come. We photograph gray, Canadian, Egyptian and barnacle geese. Geese are a big problem in Holland. They do a lot of damage in agriculture. On this farm they damage the grasslands. They not only eat the grass but also dirty it with their feces. And since they are with hundreds or even a thousand, they trample the meadow. Then wet, muddy patches appear in the fields. In this video I will show you the damage that geese cause. I filmed the whole thing with a Gopro 5 and 8. I hope you enjoy the video as much as we did this morning!
