Greg’s First Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

In late 2017 I captured this covey of Oklahoma bobwhite wildly flushing from a large plum thicket.

JAEGER TRACKS : QUAIL HUNTING AT RIO PIEDRA PLANTATION

Jaeger’s second bobwhite hunt of the 2020 ‘Quail Tour’ of Georgia was a stop at Rio Piedra Plantation. The cover was thicker but Jaeger still had a ball flushing a lot of bobwhite. Dad had the gun of the day and cleaned up. We found some areas to improve, but had a really fun day at the plantation. #bobwhitehunting #dachshund #gundog

Ellie’s Bomb Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

She’s hard to see through the sumac but that’s my Ellie Mae (Elton John when she’s a rock star like in this video) making the find on a sneaky covey of wild bobwhite hiding alongside a draw wall. I called it the Bomb Covey because when these birds came out of that bush it sounded like a bomb going off! Ellie was joined by Brent’s pointer Maddie and Will’s wirehair Etta and Baer. So many cool dogs so little time.

There’s a bit of NSFW language in the video so beware. I started to edit it out but ultimately decided that the covey flush is, in fact, ****** cool! Will from Tennessee sure seemed to think it was alright.

In the bobwhite hunt I did, it was shattered because the bird was too close.

The Zen of Quail Hunting

Bird numbers were way up this season, but low cover was hard to come by.
George Basabilvazo sums up the emotions that fuel a bobwhite hunter’s soul as we watch the dogs make some fine points and retrieves in the desert.

Cali’s Frost Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Ben’s little Brittany Cali found these birds on a frosty February morning in 2021.

The Tuesday before this clip (really all these frost clips) were taken we had freezing fog. This hunt was that following Thursday and the frost on the tops of the sage hadn’t melted making for a surreal landscape unlike anything I can recall in past years. The sun was out and the temperatures were in the high 20’s with only a light breeze making for a wonderful day of hunting. The big arctic blast that pushed temperatures down near 0 didn’t set in here until late the next day.

That’s a Big ‘Ole Buncha Birds | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Eric and I had a wonderful day chasing bobwhite in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Eric’s Wirehair, ,Heidi, pointed this beautiful covey of wild bobwhite in a large sand plum thicket. The normal covey size in this are is 8-12 birds. I haven’t counted but I’m pretty sure 25 birds got up on this flush. Too bad I’d forgotten to load my gun!

New Mexico Coveys | New Mexico Quail Hunting

Here are 4 Gambel’s bobwhite covey flushes captured on my trip to New Mexico last weekend. The first three have two views as there were multiple cameras operating. Tucked away at the end, as bonus footage, is an awesome Mearn’s bobwhite covey flush from this week.
Covey flush #1 is Ken’s Four Bird Covey. In the video you can hear Ken tell his wife, Tammy, that there are four birds in the brush ahead. Turns out there were a few more than four. Neat footage.
Covey flush #2 is Cognac’s Crazy Covey. Ken’s GSP Cognac tracked this covey a bit before we got them cornered. When they flush they go every direction. This was a really fun covey rise.
Covey flush #3 is Ellie’s Arroyo Covey. Ellie found these birds in a flat beside a large arroyo and held them between us until we could arrive to enjoy some fun shooting. I really just like to type (and say) the word arroyo.
Covey flush #4 is The Unharmed Covey. Nary a shot was fired as this large covey flushed over the hill past Ken’s Saki.
Bonus Montezuma Quail flush really speaks for itself. It is breathtaking footage for those of you who have never had a chance to witness these birds in person. I love it!

Tennessee Sharpshooter | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Good sport Allen missed this layup shot twice after Ellie Mae stuck this single wild bobwhite on a grey afternoon in December 2020. He redeemed himself the next day (a bit).
