“Small Game Hunting: The Hunt for the Elusive Capercaillie” is a short video depicting small game hunting with a pointing dog. We hunted in Sweden for forest birds. The weather was beautiful, and there was no shortage of encounters.
Hunting with a shotgun and a pointing bird dog for ptarmigan, capercaillie, and black grouse is extremely exciting, adrenaline-filled, and, above all, challenging. The larger the birds, the more difficult it becomes, and the old capercaillie is the hardest to outsmart. Sometimes, they seem like incredibly clever birds. On the other hand, I felt quite foolish as I wandered through the forest, missing one good opportunity after another. The conclusion is that I need to spend much more time at the shooting range with my shotgun instead of hunting in the beautiful forest.

I live in Northern Norway and fish all year round. In spring, I chase sea trout, and when the dry fly season for brown trout and Arctic char begins, I swap shrimp imitations for mayfly and mosquito imitations. Occasionally, I embark on thrilling salmon fishing trips for Atlantic salmon in the many rivers scattered up here. As autumn approaches, fishing slows down, and I trade my fishing rod for a shotgun to hunt small game. And so the years go by.

Pheasant hunting with pointing dogs! We took a trip to Fox Ridge Game Farm in Wisconsin to hunt with our buddy Todd and his one year old English Setter “Hank”. Hank is a dog out of Northwoods Bird Dogs, and did a great job pointing roosters on this hunt. Although this was a great hunt, we went into this rooster hunt with the mind set that we were training with this pointing dog.
Wisconsin rooster hunting with pointing dogs is a ton of fun, and true to Wisconsin weather, we ended up hunting in a snowstorm and extreme winds. These conditions made scenting a bit tough for Hank, but he ended up putting the pieces together.

The best way that I’ve found to start or train a bird dog is to use pigeons and launchers to simulate what a wild bird would do. Without any verbal encouragement to point or verbal rebuke for NOT pointing, I continue to give the dog opportunities to point until their natural desire to point is witnessed.

My 1 year old male Vizsla on a pretty solid point. His steadiness needs work as you can see but he did a great job for a pup. What wasn’t great was the shooting, a rare factory dud shell caused us to shoot late and but we were able to get the bird.

The Brittany is considered a versatile hunting dog, but it shines when it comes to bobwhite bird hunting. If you’re looking to chase a variety of bobwhite birds from roosters to chukar to grouse, a Brittany would make the perfect pointing and retrieving partner.
Although some Brittanies take to the water, it isn’t a part of their common repertoire. So don’t be disappointed if you don’t end up with an A+ duck dog. That’s just not their typical jam. And they lack the double coat found in many retrieving breeds, leaving them more open to the elements in wet conditions. They do typically have a flat or wavy coat, and they do well with a weekly brushing.
Brittanies don’t have the same issues that many other pet-focused breeds do, as hunting bloodlines remain predominant in the breed. But it’s important to have pups checked for hip dysplasia. Other health issues that occasionally come up in the breed are hyperthyroidism and epilepsy. So ask your breeder for thyroid and hip exams prior to bringing your new pup home.

Rizzo is my 12 week old German Shorthaired Pointer out of Nickel Creek Gun Dogs. This was his first training session with John Augustine. I can’t believe how long he held point with his head held high at such a young age and then to finish it off with a full retrieve bird in hand. I love my German Shorthaired Pointer!
