TDN Writers Room Podcast, Episode 25: February 26, 2020 with guest Dennis Albaugh

This week, the writers sat down with Dennis Albaugh, owner of two top threats to the Kentucky Derby, Dennis’ Moment and Thousand Words. They also relive AP Indy’s racing and breeding career, and preview this week’s Saudi Cup and the Fountain of Youth. Dennis Albaugh didn’t want to spend $1 million to acquire Thousands Words (Pioneerof the Nile) at the Keeneland September 2018 sale. Albaugh is among the richest people in sports, but even he has a comfort zone and says he typically doesn’t go over $400,000. But if you want something special, you will have to pay for it. And Albaugh and his team of advisors thought Thousand Words was the kind of can’t-miss perspective every homeowner longs to have. “Typically, we try to find horses in the $200,000 to $400,000 range,” said Albaugh, who was this week’s Green Group Guest of the Week and owns Thousand Words in partnership with Spendthrift Farm. “But they’re getting harder to find when you’re into Book 1 and Book 2. Thousand Words came along and we thought this horse might be a stud because his breeding was great and his looks are incredible. We’ve gone a lot further for him than we normally do.” It seems like it was money well spent. Thousand Words is 3 for 3 and is considered a top threat to the GI Kentucky Derby. On the other hand, he may not be Albaugh’s best 3-year-old. Albaugh, who has as strong a hand as any owner in the country, also has Dennis Moment (Tiznow), the likely favorite in Saturday’s GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream. We spoke to Georg Frerich and Bernd Richter about the Starvererber der Rheinlänischen Pferdezucht. Florestan von Fidelio x Rheingold es un Linienbegründer und einer der bekanntesten Dressurvererber. Nach seiner Körung wurde er Ende der 80er Jahre an das Nordrhein-Westfälische Landgestüt nach Warendorf verkauft. Hier traf er auch Georg Frerich, der ihn als Deckstellenleiter die ersten Jahre unter seiner Fittiche hatte. Bernd Richter is a langjähriger Auktionator des Westfälischen Pferdestammbuches und hat zahlreiche Nachkommen von Florestan unterm Hammer gehabt. Mit uns prechen diese Pferdemänner über den einmaligen Hengst. Wassen wir noch alles über die large Vererberhengste der Pferdezucht, die weltweit legendären Reitsportnachwuchs gezeugt haben? Wer könnte sich besser erinnern als die Menschen, die ganz eng mit ihnen verbunden waren. Diejenigen, die selbst gezüchtet haben, die ihre Besitzer oder langjährigen Wegbegleiter waren.
