Digweed: pigeon shooting with warm cartridges

Twenty-times world shooting champion George Digweed is out on the English North Downs shooting flighting pigeon on maize stubble. 90% of the birds are over 60 yards away, some nearing 100 yards. As well as a lesson in long range shooting George also shows us why it’s important to keep those cartridges warm for the best performance.

Why shoot pigeons?
The woodpigeon is recognised as the UK’s number one agricultural pest and causes millions of pounds of damage (AHDB consultation 10-40% loss in yield. Equivalent loss of £125/ha for Oil Seed Rape, £250/ha for peas, £350-£1250/ha for brassicas) to agricultural crops every year including cereals, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and salad crops. Pigeon damage reduces the yield, quality, appearance and ultimately the saleability of the crop. Pigeons can also cause damage in gardens and allotments – pecking at the leaves and ripping off portions, often leaving just the stalks and larger leaf veins. They may also attack and strip buds, leaves and fruits off trees and bushes.
The UK woodpigeon population was last estimated at 5.4 million pairs in 2009. Densities of wood pigeon are the highest in Eastern England, coinciding with the highest concentration of horticultural production.
Wild pigeon (game) is natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It’s low in cholesterol and high in protein… and, quite simply, delicious.

Sheep hunters MIGHT need this cartridge

Take this guy in a short action, stretch it up to a 30-06 cartridge length and turn it down to 6.5, and you have 6.5 rpm, which was the predecessor that came out before the 338. Basically, all they did was dial this down to .33 caliber. It takes a .338 inch diameter bullet. It has the same dust capacity. And what it does is it allows us to house a bold action rifle the size of a small receiver. And Weatherby is making those rifles in various types and sizes, as light as five pounds. Obviously, they are aimed at wild hunters. Guys who like to backpack or ride horses to get into nature in search of moose, sheep and bears. And many sheep hunters like a larger bullet and a larger cartridge, because of the bears they might run into. Not that they need it that much for the sheep. For 44 years, I have been fortunate to photograph and write about my passion: the outdoors. Wild creatures and places have always moved me, from the first blushing rooster that scared me to death in Grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that waved me goodbye with a flick of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I have photographed, hiked, hunted, bird-watched, and fished across much of this planet. I have seen beauty everyone should see and survived adventures everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the biggest fish or hunted the biggest bucks, but I have tried. Maybe you have done it too. And that is the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world. Produced by: @red11media

The McDougal Sports Challenge

Shoots across the country are diversifying, playing to their strengths and offering more than just well-presented birds. At the Ashbourne estate in Sussex, the McDougal Challenge involves shooting a male rooster in the morning and then, after a hearty lunch, tying a fly with a tail feather and then fishing for a trout in the clear waters of the lakes. We joined a group of guns/rods hoping to join the exclusive McDougalers club. This film first appeared on Fieldsports Britain, episode 153. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that eating wild animals has real health benefits. Both rooster and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. In addition to the nutritional benefits of hunting, hunting is worth £2 billion annually to the rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK Government figures) active shooters in the UK who enjoy bird hunting according to the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice. In the UK, over 2 million hectares are actively managed for photography, creating proven conservation benefits (PACEC, 2014) and preserving important habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna, particularly farmland birds. UK game suppliers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds each year and maintain more than 25,000 hectares of wild bird cover.

Pheasant hunting in Korea
