Ellie Mae finally pinned this running covey of late-season bobwhite in the spectacular backdrop of February, 2021.
Bailey’s Campground Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
Todd’s Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Bailey, is the first of the continental breeds to make it to my page this season. She found this covey of public land bobwhites feeding in a sage flat in amongst some stately cottonwoods late in the day on 12/2/24.

Joe and Penny’s Wild Bobwhite | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
Joe from Maryland brought his pretty little setter, Penny, down to see me this weekend. We had a cool day that started with a bit of frost on the prairie and our first covey about 100 yards from the truck. Later that same walk Joe’s Penny found this covey of bobwhite and Joe was able to score on two birds. Not bad for a mostly self-taught guy with relatively limited access to wild birds. Fun stuff.

Bobwhite and Blue bobwhite flushing over pointing dogs | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
A collection of the best flushes I captured while hunting wild bobwhite in the 16-17 season. Increasing your video quality settings when viewing makes seeing the birds easier. My favorites are the huge covey at 0:13 and the feathers floating at 2:00 .

Penny’s Long Walk Single | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
In early February, 2025, Brent’s Penny Pointer found this single in the middle of a large sage flat. While everyone else in the party searched for a downed bird I made the long trek to see what she’d found. This bird held tight and flushed strong. Watch her enthusiastically search for the dead bird and deliver it to me. As brother Mark would say, “She’s shiny as a new penny!”.

Dot’s Cottonwood Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
I normally edit a lot of the approach out of my videos but I left this one entirely intact from when I turned my camera on to when I shut it off. This video shows the entire process as well as any I’ve captured in a long time. Plus, it’s Dot who I love. She’s such a sweetheart and deadly on bobwhite. I hope you enjoy this clip as much as I enjoyed filming it.

Aidan’s Banded Bobwhite | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
It’s been tough hunting this past week. This covey find by Ellie Mae and Maddie is fairly typical of what I’ve been seeing. The birds don’t leave much scent and move off the points when the dogs do find them making them extremely hard to get close to, and therefore, hard to get decent video. Despite the less than stellar dog/bird action in this video Aidan’s reaction to his banded/collared bird is pretty neat.

Dot’s Stumble Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
Dot has gotten progressively weaker as the season has passed. I have to only take her on really short walks as she has virtually no stamina. Despite her limits she almost always finds birds.

Ellie’s Reserve Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
You don’t see much of her in the clip but my Ellie Mae found these birds in some thick thistles after we had walked past them. She’s an old hand and not much escapes her. The clip is also neat because I wasn’t the only one wearing a camera. Listen to the birds flush in the clip Dave captured. They make quite the racket coming out of the thick brush.

A January Quail Hunt with Ellie and Dot | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
This is my second effort at this video. Ellie, Dot and I had a wonderful afternoon. Ellie pointed a tight-holding covey right out of the truck (I missed). She then nailed a single (I did not miss). Dot then bumped our second covey but helped Ellie with a single on covey number three. This is my first video of Dot on wild birds and I know the last clip isn’t very good but it I want to remember her.

Greg’s First Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting
In late 2017 I captured this covey of Oklahoma bobwhite wildly flushing from a large plum thicket.
