A moose decided to visit the Silver Summit neighborhood, browsing in the open space behind Kingsford Avenue. She drew a crowd of onlookers before heading up the middle of Richmond, then onward to the hillside that leads to Trailside Elementary school and Trailside Park. It’s ironic that developers want to discount the value and dismiss the importance of open space in this area for wildlife corridors, but whether it’s the Round Valley elk herd or the occasional moose visiting the area, it’s clear the open space around us is important to wildlife.

Autumn is robbing season where the hive can be robbed out by their own kind (bees), wasps or even rats. While I destroyed the main wasp’s nest couple of weeks ago, wasps number reduced significantly but still they are still here in the area.

So I setup the second layers of defense which is the dark tunnel by using the real estate signboard especially the black colour, which explain the wasps unlikely to travel all the way into the back of the hive then come up from the cut hole as to pick up the easy meal.

The third layers of defense would be the wasp trap which I put in some protein (rotten meat or cat food) and fill in with water, where this time of the year, wasp is aiming to have protein for their winter, once they get into the trap and could not fly out then drown to death.

Drone handling is about holding the drone in the right position and giving the right stimulation.

Take the drone, upside down, in your left hand so that your thumb is under his throat and forefinger on thorax. Pressing fast and with determination in this position is sometimes all what is needed, to get the partial eversion happen, but to get almost 100% outcome tap the drone abdomen sides with one fast tap, with your right hand thumb and forefinger right AFTER you have pressed with your left hand (throat/thorax grip). It is crucial to make these pressings with determination and fast after each other.
When partial eversion has happened move the drone in another position in your left hand. Take the drones abdomen, which is now hard as rock, between your left hand thumb and forefinger.
The ejaculation is completed by pressing in the middle of the abdomen. Pressing the lower part of the abdomen (not in the middle) makes the ejaculation happen faster and with greater speed, but the down side of this that when pressing lower the semen sometimes jumps to your fingers, in which case the drone has to be discarded to avoid bacteria infection. The right position must be learned in practice. When pressing right in the middle or even little upward of the center it takes more time and pressure, but the ejaculation can be made to happen so that only all semen is nicely in one spot easily obtainable. Squeezing is done somewhat as a roll towards the end of the abdomen.

Polish insemination experts use 8 drones, I have usually taken semen from 10-15 drones.

This is the first year we have an out apiary. It just so happens to be the best performing rape field in the area! It’s the 11th of April and the bees aren’t ready for it yet.

Andy is the beekeeper so unfortunately you’ve got to listen to him on most of the videos but sometimes Kay can be convinced to show an appearance, however Kay is the creative mind behind PYH, creating all of our scented candles, lip balms, moisturiser bars, branding, beeswax wraps, we are constantly expanding the bee products we sell all as natural and sustainably sourced as possible. The bees come first in our little venture as without the bees we would have nothing so no excess honey is removed if Andy thinks it will put the hive at risk, so the honey goes fast!

This is a true tale of one of the most bizarre episodes in my life! A colony of honey bees invaded a bird house in my back yard, and I took it upon myself to move the entire colony of bees out of that bird house and in to a proper bee hive. I did this in spite of having no previous experience with bees, and I did it without getting stung even once!

This experience happened to me back in 2015, but not too many people know about it… so I thought I would tell the story in a YouTube video. The visuals and the sounds of all those bees buzzing around me while I dismantle the bird house they were living in are really quite something!

One thing to keep in mind as you watch this video is that when I was a kid, I was running through a field and stumbled over a nest of yellow jackets. Those yellow jackets attacked me and stung me about a hundred times… which was pretty traumatic, and certainly something I’ll never forget. So, imagine the fears that were running through my mind at the moments leading up to popping the roof off the bird house and exposing all those bees!
