Ellie’s Bomb Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

She’s hard to see through the sumac but that’s my Ellie Mae (Elton John when she’s a rock star like in this video) making the find on a sneaky covey of wild bobwhite hiding alongside a draw wall. I called it the Bomb Covey because when these birds came out of that bush it sounded like a bomb going off! Ellie was joined by Brent’s pointer Maddie and Will’s wirehair Etta and Baer. So many cool dogs so little time.

There’s a bit of NSFW language in the video so beware. I started to edit it out but ultimately decided that the covey flush is, in fact, ****** cool! Will from Tennessee sure seemed to think it was alright.

Cali’s Frost Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Ben’s little Brittany Cali found these birds on a frosty February morning in 2021.

The Tuesday before this clip (really all these frost clips) were taken we had freezing fog. This hunt was that following Thursday and the frost on the tops of the sage hadn’t melted making for a surreal landscape unlike anything I can recall in past years. The sun was out and the temperatures were in the high 20’s with only a light breeze making for a wonderful day of hunting. The big arctic blast that pushed temperatures down near 0 didn’t set in here until late the next day.

Dot’s Woodpile Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Dot found this covey of public land birds near a big stack of wood where they are doing some brush mitigation work. Her health has dramatically decreased her stamina and energy. She gets short walks exclusively now. I’m thankful she’s still able to hunt and she certainly finds her share of birds.

Alabama Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Jimmy and Marissa’s big Brittany, Briar, found this covey of bobwhite spread out near a well pad on the nearby WMA. Not my best capture but it’s not everyday I get to hunt with a true southern gentleman like Jimmy and certainly not everyday that I get to hunt with a gorgeous southern belle like Marissa! Coveys are getting tough to find as the season progresses but I’m still out there following the dogs.

My Favorite 12 Covey Flushes – Oklahoma Quail Hunting

A collection of my 12 favorite flush captures since I started videoing my hunts. You’ll see my pointing dogs as well as those of my friends pointing coveys of bobwhite and blue bobwhite as well as Huns, rooster and ruffed grouse. I used a new format so let me know what you think. The idea came from @Wyomatt here on YouTube. I’ll add a link to his video on the end screen.

Riley’s Sand Bowl Covey | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Bob’s pointer Riley is probably the best wild bird dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of walking behind. He nailed these private land bobwhites from 40+ yards away in a brisk breeze on 1/7/24. I think that stalking behavior is likely from his frequent exposure to ruffed grouse. Not everybody gets to see dogs like Riley really putting their genetics and talent to work in real life situations. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
