Digweed: pigeon shooting with warm cartridges
Twenty-times world shooting champion George Digweed is out on the English North Downs shooting flighting pigeon on maize stubble. 90% of the birds are over 60 yards away, some nearing 100 yards. As well as a lesson in long range shooting George also shows us why it’s important to keep those cartridges warm for the best performance.

Why shoot pigeons?
The woodpigeon is recognised as the UK’s number one agricultural pest and causes millions of pounds of damage (AHDB consultation 10-40% loss in yield. Equivalent loss of £125/ha for Oil Seed Rape, £250/ha for peas, £350-£1250/ha for brassicas) to agricultural crops every year including cereals, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and salad crops. Pigeon damage reduces the yield, quality, appearance and ultimately the saleability of the crop. Pigeons can also cause damage in gardens and allotments – pecking at the leaves and ripping off portions, often leaving just the stalks and larger leaf veins. They may also attack and strip buds, leaves and fruits off trees and bushes.
The UK woodpigeon population was last estimated at 5.4 million pairs in 2009. Densities of wood pigeon are the highest in Eastern England, coinciding with the highest concentration of horticultural production.
Wild pigeon (game) is natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It’s low in cholesterol and high in protein… and, quite simply, delicious.

Walked Up Grouse Shooting in Scotland
Tonight’s Isuzu D-Max Huntsman adventure sees American hunter Nolen Sweet of Realtree, joining Team Wild’s Ian Harford on a walked up grouse shoot in the majestic highlands of Scotland. Nolen’s a crack shot when it comes to quail hunting in the USA, so he’s feeling confident that that he’ll bag a bird or two with his trusty Longthorne shotgun. But, with heavy mist and light rain, the weather’s not playing ball. Will they manage to bring some grouse home for the pot?

Shooting roosters on the Shakenhurst Estate shoot
It’s a beautiful November morning in Worcestershire on the Shakenhurst Estate shoot and Ian Harford is photographing roosters. Welcome to Great British Shooting on Team Wild TV. Late November and early December is the ideal time for a day of rooster hunting. The weather is cold and the ground is covered in solid frost, but there is a clear, stunning blue sky. All the trees are free of leaves, the birds cling well to the feeders and offer good sports. Motivated days like this aren’t just about shooting, they’re about camaraderie, spending time with friends and having some friendly competition. Stealing your fellow armed birds really makes the day better. That’s part of a day’s hunt, it’s not just about great sport, great atmosphere and great company, but also about being a little cheeky with sport birds. There is a good mix of landscape on the Shakenhurst estate. Forests, fields, parks, there is a great variety of birds in both styles and species. There have been some lovely roosters and some crispy partridges, moving away from the trees, changing direction and making some very quick targets. This is Ian’s favorite time of year. When the winter season begins, the forest presents a stunning mix of colors. The area is really full of life. Spending time shooting and enjoying time with a group of like-minded people is what life should be about. It’s not just us on the set, but all the guys behind the scenes, the beaters, all the gatherers, the woods are a hive of activity from spaniels, labradors and retrievers. It really is a community type event that brings everyone together on the field. Training Gun Dogs Over Quail
Coy Moore breeds and trains excellent pointers at his facility near Yakima, WA. Coy introduces all his dogs to birds at the earliest age, using semi-wild pen raised rooster, chukar and bobwhite. Dogs quickly learn to hold point over fast flying game birds in a real hunting environment.
