California Quail Hunting: We have a Bird Dog!

This is Bruce, my fox red lab’s second time bobwhite hunting. In the last video, he had a hard time figuring out what the smells were and what we wanted to pick up, but he was flushing birds and having a good time. This time, it, there’s a lot more interest from him in flushing birds and even finding the downed birds and retrieving to hand.

We’re hunting BLM land in Southern California for bobwhite, but on this trip, we were fortunate enough to find some doves as well. We came home with a mixed bag of both dove and valley bobwhite.

I’m not sure, but does he seem to have a natural point for a labrador? He’s certainly a full fox red hunting labrador breed, but 1/4 helm’s point doctor. Would love to know if you guys think this is a point to work on.

He’s turning into a great bobwhite hunting partner and becoming a great bobwhite hunting labrador.

Accelerated Dog Training: Backing and Whoa in 2 Days?!?!

9 month old pointer, Nellie, who had no exposure to birds until a couple of days before this video was shot is quickly taught the concepts of backing (aka honoring) a pointing dog and whoa. Backing is taught by associating that the sight of a pointing dog means the presence of game, and whoa is taught by associating by sound that whoa also means the presence of game.

Each concept, backing/honoring and whoa, is taught in two days and with fewer than 10 birds and with zero pressure applied whatsoever.

German Shorthaired Pointer Rizzo at 12 weeks old : Impressive point!

Rizzo is my 12 week old German Shorthaired Pointer out of Nickel Creek Gun Dogs. This was his first training session with John Augustine. I can’t believe how long he held point with his head held high at such a young age and then to finish it off with a full retrieve bird in hand. I love my German Shorthaired Pointer! Thanks to John Augustine at Nickel Creek Gun Dogs and Kiowa Creek Sporting Club!

Ellie’s OLAP Surprise! | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

Such a great day afield! At the close of a 12 mile day today Ellie Mae found this covey of public land bobwhite way back deep on a tract of OLAP property. I shot one of the first two birds up but what you don’t see on the left side of this clip is the 10 other birds that flushed. It’s been tough hunting this year and is great to see nice coveys on public ground.

Wire Haired Pointing Griffon vs German Shorthaired Pointer | Which One Is Right For You?

Today we are taking a look at the Wire Haired Pointing Griffon. I’m no expert on the breed, but I though you guys might like me to give you a brief overview of what I know and then compare and contrast the WPG to the German Shorthaired Pointer.

For more information about the breed be sure to check out the American Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Association!

From the AWPGA website:

The Griffon is a very people oriented dog known for its trainability and high degree of cooperation. Although the Griffon has a great love for the field and is an excellent swimmer, it is equally at home in the obedience and show ring. With its keen nose it is also a natural at tracking. The fun loving side of its personality enjoys agility training. The Griff’s outgoing personality makes it a wonderful family pet and great with children. Overall, the Griffon is one of the best-kept secrets in the Sporting Group and is the ultimate VERSATILE hunting companion.
