The best way that I’ve found to start or train a bird dog is to use pigeons and launchers to simulate what a wild bird would do. Without any verbal encouragement to point or verbal rebuke for NOT pointing, I continue to give the dog opportunities to point until their natural desire to point is witnessed.

I’ve seen, and participated in, numerous discussions on various platforms about which hunting breed is the “best”. These mostly devolve into ugly name calling which serves as proof that dogs of all breeds are better than us humans. I have my own favorite breed but I don’t allow that to keep me from enjoying as many of the other breeds as possible. I offer this collection simply as a celebration of the dogs I’ve been lucky enough to hunt behind in the last five years. It is not exhaustive as I didn’t capture good video or photos of every wonderful dog. I’ve hunted behind so many… pointers, setters, brittanies, pointers, vizslas, weimaraners, American water spaniels, cockers, pudelpointers and labrador retrievers are the ones I can remember. Some are still hunting others have passed. I hope you enjoy the ones I was able to include.

My 1 year old male Vizsla on a pretty solid point. His steadiness needs work as you can see but he did a great job for a pup. What wasn’t great was the shooting, a rare factory dud shell caused us to shoot late and but we were able to get the bird.

The Brittany is considered a versatile hunting dog, but it shines when it comes to bobwhite bird hunting. If you’re looking to chase a variety of bobwhite birds from roosters to chukar to grouse, a Brittany would make the perfect pointing and retrieving partner.
Although some Brittanies take to the water, it isn’t a part of their common repertoire. So don’t be disappointed if you don’t end up with an A+ duck dog. That’s just not their typical jam. And they lack the double coat found in many retrieving breeds, leaving them more open to the elements in wet conditions. They do typically have a flat or wavy coat, and they do well with a weekly brushing.
Brittanies don’t have the same issues that many other pet-focused breeds do, as hunting bloodlines remain predominant in the breed. But it’s important to have pups checked for hip dysplasia. Other health issues that occasionally come up in the breed are hyperthyroidism and epilepsy. So ask your breeder for thyroid and hip exams prior to bringing your new pup home.

I can’t believe how long he held point with his head held high at such a young age and then to finish it off with a full retrieve bird in hand. I love my German Shorthaired Pointer! Pheasant hunting with pointing dogs! We took a trip to Fox Ridge Game Farm in Wisconsin to hunt with our buddy Todd and his one year old English Setter “Hank”. Hank is a dog out of Northwoods Bird Dogs, and did a great job pointing roosters on this hunt. Although this was a great hunt, we went into this rooster hunt with the mind set that we were training with this pointing dog.
Wisconsin rooster hunting with pointing dogs is a ton of fun, and true to Wisconsin weather, we ended up hunting in a snowstorm and extreme winds. These conditions made scenting a bit tough for Hank, but he ended up putting the pieces together.
We hope you enjoy this rooster hunt with pointing dogs as much as we did!

This video compares the Dogtra QL-2 electronic launcher with DT Systems BL-509 launcher. Electronic launchers (aka remote launchers) and good flying birds are a great way to convince bird dogs that birds can’t be caught which encourages their natural pointing instincts to emerge.
